In a valley surrounded by rocky mountains, an old farmer named Pak We and his wife lived. His land was not fertile and he had to work from sunrise to sunset, sometimes even at night, to get food. They didn’t have children and couldn’t afford to adopt. Pak found joy in fishing in a pond up in the hills. He often caught many fish thanks to his skill, which he sold in the nearby village for some comfort. Despite their tough life, the old couple were content, but they were worried about their future when they would become too old to work.

One summer, Pak noticed that the number of fish in the pond was decreasing and the water level was falling. He couldn’t understand why this was happening. He was still skilled, the bait was good, and his eyesight was sharp. As the pond started to dry up, he realized what was causing his problem. He saw a bullfrog, almost as big as an elephant, in the mud. Angry, Pak blamed the frog for eating all the fish and drinking all the water, which threatened him and his wife with starvation. Pak even cursed the frog’s ancestors and relatives. However, the frog calmly told Pak not to worry and asked to live in his house.

Pak walked slowly while the frog jumped ahead with his long legs. When they arrived home, Mrs. Pak was shocked at the idea of having a frog as a guest. But when Pak told her that the frog was good at conversation, she welcomed him and even gave him one of their best rooms.

One morning, the frog sang a beautiful song to the rising sun which seemed to bring blessings. There were animals loaded with all kinds of boxes, bundles, and bales waiting to be unloaded. There were beautiful items made of jade, gold, and silver, fine clothes and hats for Mr. Pak, and beautiful women’s clothes for Mrs. Pak. Their house was transformed into a palace full of riches and good food.

After a week of luxury, the frog told Pak that he wanted to get married and asked Pak to find him a wife. He specifically wanted to marry Miss Peach, the beautiful daughter of Poom, a nobleman from the next village. Pak was scared but had no choice. He went to see Mr. Poom and told him about the suitor’s wealth, power, and fame. However, when Pak revealed that the suitor was a frog, Mr. Poom was furious and ordered his men to punish Pak. Suddenly, the sky darkened, there was lightning, thunder, and heavy rain. Scared, Mr. Poom agreed to let his daughter marry the frog.

Miss Peach was prepared for the wedding and, as per the tradition, her eyes were closed. She was taken to the frog’s house with great ceremony and the wedding took place. When she opened her eyes in the bridal chamber, she was shocked to see that she had married a frog. However, when she was asked to cut open the frog’s skin, she found a prince inside. He was the son of the King of the Stars who had been punished to live as a frog on earth. He had to complete three tasks before he could return to Star Land. These tasks were to drink all the water in the lake, eat all the fish, and marry a beautiful human woman. Now, he had to return home to his father with his wife. As he finished his story, a bright chariot appeared at the door of the house. The prince and his wife got in and disappeared into the clouds. From then on, a new double star could be seen in the sky.
