Every morning, the children of Korea wake up to the chirping of sparrows. These small birds build their nests between the eaves and the roof of houses, amidst the wisteria. In spring, people plant seeds of melon, gourd, and magnolia in the sunny parts of their homes. Throughout the summer and late into autumn, the walls and roofs are covered with thick green leaves. Sparrows find refuge here, with the mother bird laying her eggs and the father bird foraging for her. When the chicks hatch, both parents put in effort to raise and teach them to fly.

The sparrow soon returned and perched on the edge of the roof, chirping in gratitude. It then flew to the city of sparrows, the capital of sparrows, to tell the king of sparrows about the man who saved its life.

The king of sparrows and his aides found this story very interesting. They decided to reward the kind man. They went to a warehouse where they kept beautiful treasures that people loved. They chose gifts that they thought the man would like: gold, jade, silk, cups, plates, rice, horses, cows, and beautiful maids to serve him. They also included silk and cotton clothes, and delicious food and drinks. They used magic to put all these gifts into a seed and gave it to the sparrow to deliver to the man.

In the autumn, they harvested a large and magnificent gourd from the vine. When they cut it open, it was filled with rich treasures.

A cruel man who hated sparrows heard of their fortune and was jealous. He wanted to become rich in the same way, so he hurt a sparrow and then “nursed” it back to health. When the sparrow returned to the land of sparrows, it told the king about the man’s cruelty. The king gave the man a seed to give to the sparrow. The man planted the seed and waited eagerly for it to grow. It grew into a dense vine that covered his entire house. In the fall, he harvested and opened a gourd. But instead of treasures, it contained people who demanded money from him. He eventually lost all his money and his house. He would have starved to death if it wasn’t for the kindness of the man who treated the sparrow kindly. The cruel man and his wife had to rely on the charity of their neighbors for the rest of their lives.
