물고기들이 사는 바닷속 세계에 문제가 생겼어요. 모든 바다 생물들이 걱정하고 있었어요. 왜냐하면 물고기 왕이 입에서 엄청난 통증을 겪고 있었기 때문이에요. 이런 일이 벌어진 이유를 알려드릴게요.

A problem arose in the underwater world where the fishes live. All the sea creatures were worried. This was because the Fish King was experiencing tremendous pain in his mouth. I’ll tell you why this happened.

한 날, 왕이 그의 궁전 밖에서 수영하다가 맛있어 보이는 것이 물속에 떠 있는 것을 보았어요. 그는 빠르게 그것을 삼키려 했지만, 그의 아가미에 꽂힌 낚시바늘을 거의 삼키려 했습니다. 그것은 바닷면 위의 어부들이 미끼로 놓은 것이었어요. 물고기 왕이 입에서 낚시바늘을 느꼈을 때, 그는 뒤로 물러났어요. 줄은 끊어졌지만 바늘은 그대로 있었고, 왕에게 열과 많은 통증을 주었어요.

One day, the king was swimming outside his palace and saw something delicious floating in the water. He quickly tried to swallow it, but he almost swallowed a fishing hook stuck in his gills. It was bait set by the fishermen above the sea surface. When the Fish King felt the fishing hook in his mouth, he backed away. The line was broken, but the hook remained and gave the king a fever and a lot of pain.

Now the problem was how to remove the fishing hook and treat the king. All the wise sea creatures from turtles to freshwater fish, from water striders to whales were summoned to the palace to find a solution. There were many debates among the sea doctors, and many fins were waved. The turtle was considered the most knowledgeable and experienced. He carefully examined the king’s condition before diagnosing the problem or prescribing a treatment. After consulting with other doctors, it was decided that the ointment made from the rabbit’s eyes would remove the fishing hook and alleviate the king’s pain.

그래서 거북 박사가 바다로 보내져서 토끼를 바다로 초대하게 되었어요. 그들은 토끼의 눈에서 묻은 것을 만들어 왕의 목에 바르고 싶었어요.

So, Dr. Turtle was sent to the sea to invite the rabbit. They wanted to make an ointment from the rabbit’s eyes and apply it to the king’s neck.

When Dr. Turtle arrived at the beach, he saw the rabbit coming out of his burrow and walking in the forest. Dr. Turtle greeted the rabbit politely.

“It’s a hot day today,” said Dr. Turtle, wiping his forehead and the sand from his toenails.

거북 박사가 토끼를 끊으며 말했습니다. “아, 그래, 토끼 형제, 이 경치는 모두 아주 아름답지만, 바다 밑의 보석들, 나무들, 꽃들, 그리고 모든 사랑스러운 것들과는 비교할 수 없어.”

Dr. Turtle interrupted the rabbit. “Ah, yes, brother rabbit, all these views are very beautiful, but they can’t compare to the gems, trees, flowers, and all the lovely things under the sea.”

토끼는 궁금해했습니다. 그는 물 밑에는 보통 물고기와 해조류밖에 없다고 들었을 뿐이었습니다. 이제 그는 다른 이야기를 들었습니다. “내 친구, 네가 말하는 것은 흥미롭군. 계속해.”

The rabbit was curious. He had heard that there were usually only fish and seaweed under the water. Now he heard a different story. “My friend, what you’re saying is interesting. Go on.”

거북 박사는 바다 바닥에 있는 멋진 산들과 계곡들, 모든 종류의 드문 수생 식물들, 금과 은의 나무들, 그리고 모든 색깔의 꽃들과 즐거운 향기에 대해 이야기하였습니다.

Dr. Turtle talked about the wonderful mountains and valleys on the sea floor, all kinds of rare aquatic plants, trees of gold and silver, and flowers of all colors and pleasant fragrances.

“너는 나를 놀라게 해,”라며 토끼 형제가 더 관심을 가지며 말했습니다.

“You surprise me,” said brother rabbit with more interest.

“그렇습니다, 그리고 모든 종류의 맛있는 것들과 음료, 음악과 춤, 그리고 모든 좋은 것들이 있습니다. 함께 오셔서 우리의 손님이 되세요. 우리 왕이 당신을 초대하라고 나를 보냈습니다.”

“Yes, and there are all kinds of delicious things and drinks, music and dance, and all the good things. Come and be our guest. Our king has sent me to invite you.”

“Can I go?” asked brother rabbit happily.

“그럼, 바로 지금. 내 등에 올라타. 나가 너를 데려갈게.”

“Sure, right now. Climb on my back. I’ll take you out.”

그래서 토끼는 달려가고 거북은 물가로 걸어갔습니다.

So the rabbit ran and the turtle walked to the water.

“이제 내 앞 껍질을 꽉 잡아,”라며 거북 박사가 말했습니다. “우리는 물 속으로 들어가.”

“Now hold on to my front shell tightly,” said Dr. Turtle. “We are going into the water.”

They sank down, down under the blue waves and arrived at the king’s palace. There, the rabbit found that everything was true as the turtle had said. The colors, the abundant gems were just as he had described.

Dr. Turtle introduced brother rabbit to some of the princes and princesses of the kingdom, and they showed their guest the sights and treasures of the palace. Meanwhile, Dr. Turtle attended a meeting of doctors to announce the success of his errand.

But while Mr. Rabbit was enjoying himself, he happened to hear what they were saying. In the process, he found out why he was brought there. Horrified by the thought of losing his eyes, he decided to protect his sight and deceive the turtle. But he didn’t tell anyone.

So when the royal administrators politely informed him that he had to give up his eyes for the king to recover, brother rabbit responded with equally polite regret:

Because I was worried that seawater might damage my sight, I took out my normal eyes and buried them in the sand, and I wear these crystal eyes, usually in very dusty or humid weather.”

At this, the faces of the royal administrators fell. How could they deliver this news to the king and disappoint him?

So brother rabbit, riding on Dr. Turtle’s back, was soon out of the water and on land.

He jumped down in an instant, ran away hastily, arrived at the forest, and only his cotton tail was visible. Soon he was gone.

Dr. Turtle returned in tears and told how the rabbit had deceived him.
