한국에는 개가 많지만 고양이는 별로 없습니다. 사람들이 고양이를 좋아하거나 애완동물로 키우지 않아서 집에서 볼 수 없습니다. 심지어 어린 송아지조차도 고양이보다 아이들로부터 더 많은 애정을 받습니다. 그리고 개 새끼를 고양이보다 선호합니다.

(Cats and Dogs)

There are many dogs in Korea, but not many cats. People do not like cats or keep them as pets, so you cannot see them at home. Even young calves receive more affection from children than cats. And people prefer puppies to kittens.

한국 고양이들은 일본 고양이처럼 꼬리가 짧지 않습니다. 또한 중국 고양이처럼 눈의 틈새 너비로 시간을 알리는데도 사용되지 않습니다.

Korean cats do not have short tails like Japanese cats. Also, they are not used to tell time by the width of the slit of the eyes like Chinese cats.

한국의 고양이들은 사람들과 함께하는 것을 즐기지 않아서 야생적입니다. 사람들도 고양이에 대해 같은 생각을 가지고 있습니다. 특히 고양이들은 개를 싫어합니다. 어미 고양이들은 새끼 고양이들에게 개의 잔인함과 고양이와 개가 왜 어울리지 않는지에 대한 이야기를 해줍니다.

Korean cats are wild because they do not enjoy being with people. People have the same thoughts about cats. Especially, cats hate dogs. Mother cats tell their kittens stories about the cruelty of dogs and why cats and dogs do not get along.

한국 고양이들은 쉬익거리며 등을 굽히고 꼬리를 부풀리고 긁습니다. 또한 살며시 소리내며 스스로를 정리하며, 쥐와 새를 잡는데 탁월합니다. 하지만 그들의 생활은 많은 개들로 인해 어려워서 힘듭니다. 한국 고양이는 발을 젖게 하는 것을 좋아하지 않지만, 자주 물을 헤치며 그것을 쫓는 개들로부터 도망칩니다. 새끼 고양이들에게는 어떻게 그들이 사나운 개들을 버티며 성장하는지가 신기할 뿐입니다.

Korean cats hiss, arch their backs, puff up their tails, and scratch. They also quietly groom themselves and are excellent at catching mice and birds. However, their lives are difficult because of the many dogs. Korean cats do not like to get their feet wet, but they often run away from dogs that chase them through the water. It is amazing to kittens how they endure fierce dogs and grow up.

고양이가 웃어서는 안 됐던 때에 웃었을 때부터 이 모든 적대감이 시작되었습니다. 고양이를 웃게 한 것은 학교 아이들의 일당이었지만, 개는 고양이의 경솔함을 결코 용서하지 않았습니다. 그리고 이렇게 일이 벌어졌습니다.

All this hostility started when the cat laughed when it should not have. The ones who made the cat laugh were a group of school children, but the dog never forgave the cat’s recklessness. And that’s how things happened.

오래 전, 산의 요정이 땅으로 내려와서 와인 가게를 소유한 티프 풀이라는 노인에게 친절하게 대해주었습니다. 요정은 톡가비에게 귀중한 보석으로 노인에게 보상하도록 요청했습니다.

A long time ago, a fairy from the mountain came down to the earth and was kind to an old man named Tifful who owned a wine shop. The fairy asked Tokgabi to reward the old man with a precious gem.

어느 날 밤, 톡가비는 보석을 티프 풀의 와인 병에 떨어뜨렸습니다. 그 후로 와인은 결코 바닥나지 않았습니다. 병은 항상 가득했습니다. 티프 풀은 매일 이웃들에게 많은 양의 와인을 팔았고, 그것은 좋고 싸서 그를 매우 인기 있게 만들었습니다. 다시 채울 필요 없이 병은 항상 가득하여 티프 풀이 노년에 빈곤에 대해 걱정하지 않아도 될 것을 보장했습니다. 그의 유일한 동료들은 수 납이라는 개와 미 야우라는 고양이였습니다. 그들은 그때 모두 행복하게 함께 살았습니다.

One night, Tokgabi dropped the gem into Tifful’s wine bottle. Since then, the wine never ran out. The bottle was always full. Tifful sold a lot of wine to his neighbors every day, and it was good and cheap, which made him very popular. The bottle was always full without needing to be refilled, ensuring that Tifful would not have to worry about poverty in his old age. His only companions were a dog named Sunap and a cat named Miyaou. They all lived happily together at that time.

하지만 어느 날 병이 비어있는 것이 발견되었고, 마법의 돌이 없어진 것이었습니다. 임박한 가난에 직면한 노인은 절망하였고 이웃들이 그와 동정하였습니다. 그들은 티프 풀의 가게에서처럼 좋고 저렴한 와인을 사지 못할 것임을 알았습니다.

But one day it was found that the bottle was empty, and the magic stone was gone. The old man, facing impending poverty, despaired and his neighbors sympathized with him. They knew they would not be able to buy good and cheap wine like in Tifful’s shop.

The loss of this magic stone was a turning point for Tifful’s pets. The cat became the most diligent thing known so far. She immediately began to find the missing stone by looking for all the rat nests in the village. The noise she made at night was so loud that some people blamed Tokgabi for causing the commotion. But it was Miyaou, the cat that caused all the confusion in finding the lost stone. Despite all her efforts, Miyaou could not find the magic wine stone, and Tifful became increasingly poor.

개는 고양이처럼 오르지 못했지만, 빠르게 달릴 수 있었고 냄새를 잘 맡았습니다. 그는 돌을 찾아 전국을 돌아다녔습니다, 심지어 얼어버린 강을 건너기까지 했습니다. 그의 최선의 노력에도 불구하고, 그는 아무것도 찾지 못했습니다.

The dog could not climb like a cat, but he could run fast and had a good sense of smell. He traveled all over the country to find the stone, even crossing a frozen river. Despite his best efforts, he found nothing.

겨울이 지나고 얼음이 녹았지만, 강물은 여전히 차가웠습니다. 어느 날, 쥐를 쫓으면서 고양이는 녹색 비누석 상자에 스쳤습니다. 안의 돌 냄새를 알아차리고, 그녀는 열심히 그것을 열려고 했습니다.

Winter passed and the ice melted, but the river was still cold. One day, while chasing a mouse, the cat brushed against a green soapstone box. She noticed the smell of the stone inside and tried hard to open it.

When she could not open it herself, she asked the mice to gnaw open the box in exchange for six months of peace from her and the dog. The mice agreed and succeeded in finding the stone. The dog immediately took the stone in his mouth and ran to the river, with Miyaou following him.

Snap told Miyaou to ride on his back and hold on tight as they crossed the river. She had to hold the gem in her mouth and not open it until they arrived on the other side. Miyaou agreed and made a plan to run to the owner as soon as they arrived on the shore to get credit for finding the stone.

As they were almost across, a group of children started laughing at them. Snap ignored them, but Miyaou couldn’t hold back her laughter and dropped the gem into the river. Angry, Snap dove to the river bottom, knocking Miyaou over. When they arrived on the shore, Snap tried to chase Miyaou, but she climbed up a tree.

그날 이후로 한국의 고양이와 개는 더 이상 친구가 아니었습니다. 야생적이고 사랑받지 못하는 고양이는 톡가비의 박물관에서 나쁜 동물로 간주되는 반면, 개는 사람의 충실한 친구로 간주되었습니다.

From that day on, cats and dogs in Korea were no longer friends. The wild and unloved cat was considered a bad animal in Tokgabi’s museum, while the dog was considered a faithful friend of humans.
